BYOB Pick of the Week: Alex’s Italian Restaurant

0

Everyone loves a well-crafted cocktail, but every now and then it’s nice to give your wallet a break. BYOB Pick of the Week is your guide to the best BYOB restaurants downtown has to offer complete with entree recommendations and drool-worthy food pics.

There’s a lot to like about Alex’s Italian Restaurant. Not only is it affordable and located just a block away from the Grove PATH station, but this BYOB restaurant is also steps away from Village Wine & Liquors, where you can find a wide array of affordable wines and beers.

Alex’s doesn’t pretend to be upscale or trendy. This is a casual, comfort food venue with generous entrees that are mostly priced under $20. Among the heartier dishes you’ll find are the baked ziti ($13.95), eggplant rolatini ($15.95), and baked lasagna ($15.95). The menu also includes a few more ambitious entrees such as a seafoood soup with mussels, calamari, shrimp, and pasta (zuppa de mare, $19.95) and a spicy calamari fra diavolo ($15.95).

The gourmet pizzas are solid — slightly thicker than your typical Jersey City pizza — but just the right size for two people. The Monte Carlo and White Pizza with Spinach are particular standouts. The Sicilian pie is also excellent, loaded with cheese and fresh, spicy tomato sauce.

Desserts are all under $7 and range from cannoli to tiramisu. (Their availability may vary).

Service at the family-run restaurant is friendly, and if Alex is around he’ll make it a point of introducing himself and periodically check in on your table to make sure everything is in order. On your way out, you might even get a gift certificate for your next visit. (Note that the gift certificate is only valid for entree dinners, and not pizza or take-out).
