BYOB Thursdays: Dinner at Broa

0

Everyone loves a well-crafted cocktail, but every now and then it’s nice to give your wallet a break. BYOB Thursdays is your guide to the best BYOB restaurants downtown has to offer complete with entree recommendations and drool-worthy photos.

It’s been named one of downtown’s best date spots and most recently one of the country’s best Portuguese restaurants. Jersey City residents are fortunate to have Broa — a rustic BYOB Portuguese restaurant — in their backyard.

There is no paper menu at Broa and that’s because the entrees are constantly changing based on the season and availability. That said, you’ll want to take a quick picture of the handwritten chalkboard menu when you first walk in.

Most plates are small (think tapas size) and shareable. Favorites include the garden snails, tiny, dime-sized snails in oregano and garlic broth; the cod fritters, perfectly fried and stuffed with codfish; the hearty Russian potato salad, with peas, egg, carrots, and red onion; and the stuffed mushrooms, with bits of Portuguese chorizo and melted cheese.

Broa isn’t big on dessert, but make sure to ask about the pastel de nata, a deliciously creamy Portuguese egg tart pastry served golden brown and with coffee beans.
