City officials have painted over the Jersey City Monopoly mural, which was commissioned by the Jersey City Mural Arts Program back in June. The mural — located on a section of the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza — was based on a Monopoly board created by local artist Gary Wynans, aka Mr. AbiLLity. From the start, Wynans was asked to alter his original work to avoid offending residents, but in the past few weeks more alterations were requested by the city. On Monday, the mural was completely painted over by the city.
The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) recently posted an interview with Wynans along with a letter to the city asking for a detailed public art policy for future commissioned works. —NCAC
