The Port Authority recently livestreamed an info session on the upcoming weekend suspension of the 33rd Street line. If you weren’t able to catch it, below are a few of the details you need to know. You can still watch the roughly 30-minute video presentations on the PA’s Facebook page, but keep in mind that it’s divided into two videos because of a “power issue” during the initial stream. So start here and then watch the second part. Otherwise, here’s the gist of what you should know:

  • The JSQ-33rd Street line will be suspended on weekends from August 6 through December 19.
  • However, the JSQ-33rd Street line will operate on 3 major holiday weekends: Labor Day weekend, Veterans’ Day weekend, and Thanksgiving Day weekend.
  • On Saturdays from August 6 – December 19, the last JSQ-33rd train will run at 12.10am. Normal service will resume each Monday at 5am.
  • PATH will not run extra WTC-NWK trains on weekends. WTC-NWK trains will continue to operate on their normal 20-minute weekend schedule.
  • However, there will be a “new” WTC-JSQ line that will run every 12 minutes. This line does not show up on their new map or brochures and they refer to it as an “unscheduled” line to accommodate ridership on an as needed basis. (They mention this around the 15-minute mark in the first video. You’ll want to crank up your speakers as the audio is very low).
  • A WTC-Hoboken line will run every 12 minutes as well as a new JSQ-Hoboken line. Basically, if you live in Hoboken, you’re in really good shape.
  • Before you exit the WTC PATH turnstiles, you’ll be given free roundtrip shuttle bus tickets. Vouchers will only be handed out at the WTC station.
  • The buses will be provided by Academy. (I asked how many passengers each bus will fit and whether they’ll be air conditioned, but the PA did not answer my question).
  • During the “day,” the buses will run every 10 minutes. At “night” they will run every 20-30 minutes. They did not elaborate on precise “day” or “night” hours.
  • The buses will not stop at the exact PATH stations. You’ll have to walk to the bus zones. For instance, the WTC bus will depart from Warren Street and Church Street. It will drop passengers off on Murray and Church. You can see the drop off and pick-up zones in the image above.
  • The buses will travel north along 6th Avenue. The final stop will be 29th Street and 6th Ave.
  • The buses will travel south along 7th Avenue. The final stop will be Murray and Church.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions (such as what happens if you work a double shift and don’t get a bus voucher). Hopefully the PA will address those questions in the near future. In the meantime, you can find more info here and read their info brochure here (PDF).
