Now that the fall weather has finally (sort of) arrived — it’s time for some autumn-like events. From the very first Hay Maze at Exchange Place to the Ghost of Uncle Joe’s at Harsimus Cemetery — here are your best picks for the weekend.

 

What: Theatre in the Heights at The Statuary
When: Friday, October 20 at 7:30pm
Where: The Statuary at 53 Congress
Join Theatre in the Heights’ for their second staged play reading tonight at The Statuary. The play — A Lovely Damaged Quality — by playwright Mackenzie McBride is about a young woman who “retreats into the dark and chaotic depths of her imagination as she tries to make sense of her father’s suicide.” Tickets are $10 and refreshments will be provided.

What: Poltergeist Movie Screening at Van Vorst Park
When: Friday, October 20 at 7pm
Where: Van Vorst Park
They’re heeeere. Film in Van Vorst Park presents a special screening of Poltergeist (1982) tonight at 7pm. Actor Martin Casella will be on hand to talk about the movie before and after the screening.

What: Hudson Hall Grand Opening Party
When: Friday, October 20 at 4pm
Where: Hudson Hall at 364 Marin Boulevard
Hudson Hall is officially celebrating its ribbon cutting ceremony tonight with live music, $5 house beer, and a the best $10 pastrami sandwich you’ll ever have (it normally costs $16). For some tips on what to order, check out our first impression.

What: Newport Green Annual Pumpkin Carnival
When: Saturday, October 21 at 11am to 1pm
Where: Newport Green
Kids young and old are invited to Newport Green this afternoon for a costume parade and pumpkin decorating. The party will be held near the carousel at Newport Green and feature candy, face painting, and a parade.

What: Bambino Chef Birthday Party
When: Saturday, October 21 from 3pm to 6pm
Where: 213 Newark Avenue
Children’s cooking school Bambino Chef is celebrating a special birthday this Saturday — it’s own. The day will be filled with cupcake decorating, raffles, prizes, and more. The birthday party is open to everyone (no need to RSVP).

What: The Ghost of Uncle Joe’s
When: Saturday, October 21 at 7pm
Where: Harsimus Cemetery at 435 Newark Avenue
The Ghost of Uncle Joe’s is an annual rock show/costume party held at the Harsimus Cemetery. Local musicians will perform covers from The Kinks, Elvis, De La Soul, and more. Food and beer will be sold by local food trucks. Tickets cost $10 and sales help preserve and restore the Harsimus Cemetery. After parties (with more classic cover bands) are slated for Lo-Fi, Pet Shop, LITM, and Porta. Check out the lineup here.

What: Fall Hay Maze and Pumpkin Patch
When: Saturday, October 21 – 22 & Saturday, October 28th – 29th from 11am to 7pm
Where: Urby Parking Lot at 200 Greene Street
The Urby Parking Lot is getting a fall makeover. The Exchange Place Hay Maze and Pumpkin Patch Party is a neighborhood celebration of everything we love about autumn — from pumpkins to hay mazes (right here in downtown). Admission is free, but some parts — such as the Hay Maze — require a ticket.

What: Halloween in Paulus Hook Party
When: Sunday, October 22 from 12pm to 3pm
Where: Grand and Washington Streets
Celebrate Halloween Paulus Hook style at the Paulus Hook Halloween Costume Parade. The family friendly event will include a pet parade and children’s costume parade. Winners will be judged by Coucilwoman Candice Osborne. Tickets are $10 ($15 family tickets) and benefit the Paulus Hook Park Redesign and Liberty Humane Society.
