India Square may soon get a Pedestrian Plaza of its own. Mayor Steven Fulop recently tweeted the city’s plans to install parklets and outdoor dining spaces along Newark Avenue between Kennedy Blvd and Tonnelle Ave.

The neighborhood, which is just north of Journal Square, is home to the city’s best Indian restaurants and grocery stores.

Fulop’s plan calls for adding a total of five parklets to the area. The parklets would require eliminating about 20 parking spots along that stretch of Newark Avenue. The fifth parklet would be located along Liberty Avenue. In addition, a stretch of Herbert Place would be closed to traffic.

The first Jersey City Pedestrian Plaza was created in 2015. Since the start of the pandemic, city officials have made it easier for restaurants to add parklets and outdoor dining spaces in an attempt to help them capture lost business. Just last week there was also talk about creating an Exchange Place Pedestrian Plaza.

According to Fulop’s tweet, work on the India Square Pedestrian Plaza could start immediately after Labor Day.
