A new Central American restaurant is opening at 279 Central Avenue in the Heights. Irma’s Cafe will specialize in Mexican-Salvadoran comfort food offering dishes like pupusas, tamales, and birria tacos.

Birria tacos are the pinnacle of street food. Hailing from the state of Jalisco, they’re traditionally made from goat, beef, or mutton that is simmered for hours. (So you get a very tender meat in your tacos). Fat from the broth is added to the tortilla to make them extra crispy and they’re then filled with meat and cheese. The juicy tacos are served with a cup of consome that you can use for dipping your taco. Birria tacos will be one of Irma’s signature dishes and a plate of four birria tacos with consome will cost $12.

In addition to the birria tacos, Irma’s Cafe will also offer traditional tacos at $10, a rangeĀ  of pupuasas for $2.50 each, and tamales at $2 each. They will also have sandwiches, breakfast, coffee, and smoothies. You can follow them on their Facebook page for updates (or follow the Central Ave SID). The cafe should open very soon.
