The mayors of Jersey City and Hoboken are looking to launch a joint bike share program that they hope will make it easier for residents and visitors to travel between both cities.

“Now, more than ever, a greater number of people are relying on shared transportation for essential services, employment, and more, and a regional approach will substantially improve the quality of life for all of our residents,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla and Mayor Steven Fulop. “And, as our communities continue to adapt to COVID-19, this coordinated effort will provide residents and visitors with healthy, socially distanced alternatives to mass transit.”

Jersey City and Hoboken are two of the most bike-friendly cities in the state with a combined 75 miles of bike lanes. However, both cities use competing bike-share programs. In 2015, Jersey City partnered with Citi Bike, whereas Hoboken utilizes Jersey Bike. That means someone from Jersey City can’t dock their bike in Hoboken and vice versa.

A regional bike share program will also help both cities usher in safer transportation options. Both cities are hoping to eliminate pedestrian fatalities and injuries within 10 years or less as part of their Vision Zero campaigns.

Both mayors will be looking at partners in the coming weeks with the hopes of launching the new bike share program later this year.
