Mayor Steve Fulop and the Health and Human Services Department recently announced that the city will invest $2 million to build out six COVID-19 vaccination sites. The sites will be located throughout Jersey City and will be instrumental in the mayor’s plan to have 70% of the city vaccinated within six months.

“We’ve been anticipating the arrival of a vaccine for several months, and now that it is almost here, we want to be sure our operations can start immediately, while remaining efficient and organized so that we can maximize distribution of immunizations and boosters accordingly,” said Stacey Flanagan, Director of Health and Human Services.

Fixtech Medical USA, Inc. is expected to win the contract to build out the six points of distribution (POD) sites. NJ.com reports that four of the six sites have been confirmed at the following addresses:

  • Mary McLeod Bethune Life Center at 140 MLK Drive
  • Joseph Connors Senior Center at 28 Paterson Street
  • James J. Ferris High School at 35 Colgate Street
  • Franklin L. Williams School at 222 Laidlaw Avenue

“We need to have a contingency plan in place to avoid any delays in making these critical vaccines available in the case that the state or federal government doesn’t provide resources,” said Mayor Fulop via press release. “We feel that it is important to take the same approach as we did with testing, that we will use city dollars to get a program running and then fight to get the reimbursement later,” said Fulop.

The state’s first COVID-19 vaccines were administered this past Tuesday at University Hospital in Newark. Here in Hudson County, officials announced that the USS Juneau Center in Kearny, NJ, will become one of Hudson County’s first COVID-19 vaccination centers.

Jersey City has reported 12,344 confirmed coronavirus cases and 559 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the JC COVID-19 dashboard.
