Sabor a Maiz

Central Avenue is home to some of Jersey City’s most diverse restaurants. However, even the Heights’ main commercial strip has struggled when it comes to Venezuelan food. That’s all about to change with the debut of Sabor a Maiz — a new Venezuelan restaurant offering traditional, homemade Venezuelan eats.

Located at 408 Central Avenue (between Thorne and South Street), Sabor a Maiz offers a variety of Venezuelan street snacks. Their menu includes cachapas (stuffed corn pancakes), pepitos (beef or chicken sandwiches), and empanadas. The restaurant also has some hearty breakfast plates like the “criollo.” It includes an arepa, eggs, shredded beef, grated cheese, and black beans for $12.

Naturally, Sabor a Maiz also specializes in arepas — arguably one of Venezuela’s most popular dishes. Arepas are fluffy, white corn cakes stuffed with beef, chicken, pernil (roasted pork), or cheese. Arepa prices range from $6 to $9 based on the filling you choose.

The restaurant also offers bienmesabe — a traditional Venezuelan cake that’s made with coconut and liqueur and soaked in egg yolks and coconut milk. In the coming days the restaurant will also let diners BYOB for dinner.

If you prefer to have food delivered to you, Sabor a Maiz offers delivery service via GrubHub.

(Side note, if you live near Journal Square — El Cocotero is another great Venezuelan restaurant we’d recommend).
