Darke Pines DowntownerOne of Jersey City’s best sandwich shops is closing its doors. Downtowner by Darke Pines is closing its shop at 9 Erie Street effective immediately. The sandwich shop opened in June of 2020.

“We had the inspiration for Downtowner in 2019, in pre-pandemic times, and since then the world has changed a lot,” reads their Instagram post. “Labor shortages, supply chain issues, and all the rest have made running this location very, very difficult. It’s been a struggle to keep it staffed, stocked, and in operation just three days a week, when we really wanted to be open five.”

Fortunately, Downtowner fans will be able to find those epic sandwiches at local butcher shop Darke Pines, located a few blocks away at 332 Second Street.

“We have exciting expansion plans for our businesses, and the Downtowner menu will certainly have a role to play in what comes next,” reads the social media post.

Downtowner butchered, smoked, and roasted all meats in house. The menu ranged from a smoked ham sandwich to their muffuletta. Their veggie sandwiches were also among the best in town. (Pictured above is their seasonal heirloom tomato sandwich).
