Update: We’ve updated our post with new info from Lokal. Stay tuned for more details.

It looks like Talde Jersey City isn’t the only downtown restaurant to shutter its doors. Waterfront bar Taphaus has also permanently closed.

The neighborhood restaurant specialized in craft beers and American fusion cuisine serving everything from mussels and fries to burgers and salads. Located on the ground floor of the Crystal Point Condos, Taphaus had unblocked views of the New York skyline and at one point it even had access to an outdoor patio for al fresco dining. (The patio area closed not long after opening).

The closure was somewhat abrupt with no mention of it on Taphaus’ social media. We first noticed the closure back on August 15. At the time, the restaurant’s interior had already gutted. Taphaus Jersey City was the brand’s last surviving location. Taphaus Paulus Hook and Taphaus Hoboken have been closed for quite some time.

However, work has already commenced on Lokal, a new space that describes itself as an eatery and bar. The venture is reportedly by the same owners of Taphaus by completely new owners, including a Michelin star kitchen trained chef formerly of New York’s Le Circ and Nobu Fifty Seven. Lokal should open in the near future and you can follow them on Instagram.

  1. From what I’ve read and seen this place looks terrible. Indian influenced “new American” with a selfie wall (!) Im all for using local ingredients but to make obnoxious & self righteous expensive dishes with wierd flavors most people will never crave is insulting. Id like to see them fill up 6000 sq ft with people who would enjoy this more than once.

    • It’s not Indian influenced and menu/prices haven’t been revealed yet. I was at their soft/media launch last night and the food and cocktails that we sampled were quite good. They were small samples (hors d’oeuvres style) and not everything may be on the final menu, but they were still pretty tasty. I think the owner (who lives in JC) is trying to do right w/ the new space/concept. I’m not a selfie person myself, but gotta give them time to open and hit their groove.
