New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy toured Jersey City’s Bethune Center on Wednesday as city officials asked the governor for more access to COVID-19 vaccines. According to health officials, the Bethune Center has the capacity to administer 800 to 1,000 vaccines, but the center is currently vaccinating about 250 people a day.

Despite announcing six vaccination sites in December, Jersey City is only operating one vaccine pod at the moment. That’s due to the fact that Jersey City simply hasn’t received sufficient vaccine doses to distribute.

“Our obstacle is getting vaccines, so I invited the governor here,” said Mayor Steven Fulop. “We wanted him to see that the site is working very well. We wanted him to see first hand with the hope that eventually it leads to more access to the vaccines for Jersey City.”

Jersey City received just 300 vaccine doses four weeks ago, said Fulop. And while the number has increased, Jersey City is still receiving under 1,000 doses per week for the entire city. “We want to have six sites up and running,” said Fulop. “The demand is there, if we just had more doses we’d be able to get a much larger breadth of the city done.”
